THE RINGLING MUSEUM In Association With The SARASOTA FILM FESTIVAL Presents The Return Of MONDAY NIGHT MOVIES To The Historic Asolo Theatre
Sarasota, FL – Sept. 29, 2006 – The John and Mable Ringling Museum of Art, in partnership with the Sarasota Film Festival, presents Monday Night Movies, a Sarasota tradition showing the best in art, foreign and independent films on the Historic Asolo Theater big screen, beginning in October 2006.
Monday Night Movies will be shown on select Mondays at 8 p.m. throughout the year in four series of five films each.
The first movie, Stolen (USA/84 min.), Winner of the Audience Award for Best Documentary Feature at the 7th Annual Sarasota Film Festival in 2005, begins 8 p.m., Monday, Oct. 16. Stolen documents the largest art heist in modern history that occurred at the Isabella Stewart Gardner Museum in Boston. It is a full exploration of the theft and the fascinating characters involved in the investigations that followed. Stolen is directed by Rebecca Dreyfus and stars Blythe Danner, Campbell Scott and Harold J. Smith.
The fall series continues with Cocaine Cowboys, Oct 23; Häxan: Witchcraft Through The Ages (1922), Oct. 30; 49 Up, Nov. 6; and Darkon, Nov. 13.
Cocaine Cowboys (USA/116 min.) showing Oct. 23 presents a dazzling portrait of a cultural explosion by exploring the cocaine trade that forever changed Miami from a sleepy retirement community into one of the world’s most glamorous hot spots. Cocaine Cowboys is directed by Billy Corben.
Häxan: Witchcraft Through The Ages (USA/104 min.) showing Oct. 30 is a 1922 classic appropriate for Halloween. It explores the history of witchcraft, told in a variety of styles, from illustrated slideshows to dramatized events of alleged real-life occurrences, right up to the early 20th century. Häxan: Witchcraft Through The Ages is directed and written by Benjamin Christensen.
49 Up (UK/180 min.) showing Nov. 6 is the latest in a series of landmark films that began 42 years ago when the lives of a diverse group of seven-year-old children were first documented, and then examined again every seven years since at ages 14, 21, 28, 35, 42 and now at age 49. It is directed by Michael Apted.
Darkon (USA/89 min.) showing Nov. 13 is a film about the human desire to be a hero, but how, as for most, real life gets in the way. Darkon is a compelling and entertaining look at the transformative power of fantasy as we meet a group of young men and women who engage in live-action role playing. It is co-directed by Luke Meyer and Andrew Neel.

Winter 2007 Monday Night Movies continue with two five-film series presented in conjunction with the Museum of Art special exhibition Encouraging American Genius: Master Paintings From The Corcoran Gallery Of Art, Feb. 3 – April 30, 2007.
